Didn't have much expectation when I was planning the trip. We were pleasantly surprised when we got to Hualien. The scenery at 太魯閣 Taroko National Park and the east coast was impressive！
Taipei 台北 －》Hualien 花蓮站 (~3hr) Taiwan High Speed Rail 台灣高鐵 You can reserve the tickets through Internet http://railway.hinet.net or at least check the schedule and note down the Train code (車次). These information will be handy when you try to get the tickets. The counter staff I met wasn't friendly and refused to check for availability by departing time but only ask for the train code.
We got a cabby to bring us around in Hualien. He will be able to pick you up at the train station. He was also a certified tour guide and was able to give us good insights to Hualien. Together with the stone house minsu Aunt Liu, they can help you plan for fireworks, night market visit and latern.
